Maybe progress has less to do with finding more time...(#457)
This week I accidentally collected three different “learn this one small step at a time” resources:
It made me laugh because...apparently I have a type. 😂
I’ve started to think that progress has less to do with finding more time...and more to do with making the first step small enough that we'll actually take it.
Maybe that’s why I’ve always been drawn to baby steps and tiny habits.
It’s why I keep talking about spending 15 minutes on your side hustle instead of waiting for those two uninterrupted hours that may not happen this week.
It’s probably one of the reasons #jesspicks is still around almost ten years later.
When I read Hilary Gridley’s post about why she created Couch to 5K for AI, I found myself nodding along the entire time:
It’s true whether you’re learning AI, starting a walking habit, writing a newsletter, building a side hustle, or finally opening the Google Doc you’ve been avoiding.
Maybe that’s why I keep gravitating toward these kinds of programs.
They’re built around a simple idea:
Progress doesn’t have to be huge to count. It just has to be small enough that you’ll actually do it.
They’re not asking me to become an AI expert today.
Or walk a 10K tomorrow.
They’re just asking me to take today’s step.
And I think that’s part of why it works. I know exactly what “enough” looks like for today. I can check it off, close my laptop, and come back tomorrow.

I wonder how many things would feel possible if, instead of asking,
When will I have time for this?
we asked,
What’s the version that fits my life right now?

💬 Over to you: What’s something you’ve been wanting to learn or start...and what’s the smallest version of it you could do this week?

⏱️. 5-minute moves for your side hustle. If today’s version of working on your side hustle is five minutes, that’s enough. I put together a bunch of quick wins for those in-between moments…everything from getting unstuck to finding your next content idea.
🥔. We need to settle something. If someone asked for your top three ways to eat potatoes, what would you say? Mine: Nando’s mashed potatoes, fries in just about every shape, and Salt & Vinegar Lay’s. (Also, this is apparently a great first-date question.)
📅. 24-hour delulu experiment. My gurl Christine Mortensen sent this to the group chat, and I was immediately influenced. 😂 Put a calendar event six months from now called “Celebrating How Everything Worked Out.” Then spend the next day making decisions as if Future You is already celebrating. Worst case? You have a fun calendar reminder pop up in January. Best case? Maybe it changes how you show up today.
