“Sometimes the most important thing in a whole day is the rest we take between two deep breaths.” 😌 ~Etty Hillesum
breathing lessons (#391)
Ever notice how the universe keeps sending you the same message in different forms? Lately, it’s been whispering to me about the power of breathing.
From a stress management class to swimming lessons and even a chair yoga video from my friend (thanks, Lindsay! 🧘🏾♀️), breathing seems to be the theme. But I’ve come to realize that it’s not just about the physical act - it can be a metaphor for how we approach our side hustles, our day jobs, and yes, even caregiving.
Take a deep breath before reacting.
In caregiving, I’m learning to pause and ask “What’s really going on here?” or “What’s the underlying pain point?” before responding to a situation. This same practice works for business: take a deep breath, consider the bigger picture, and respond in an intentional way.
Find your rhythm.
Before pausing swimming (womp), I was trying to figure out my breathing rhythm. Essentially, how many seconds should I exhale underwater before I inhale? And was I getting enough time or air? A similar concept applies to balancing your side hustle, job, and personal life. It’s about finding a sustainable pace that works for you.
Just like finding the right rhythm underwater, life sometimes forces us to adjust our pace. My recent foot injury has made me slow down and focus on a few key things. My main thing with my business right now is taking some time to get clear on my positioning to better help you - those balancing a day job and a side hustle. Thankfully, Alice helps make sure I still show up on social media!
Breathe through discomfort.
Yoga reminds us to breathe through challenging poses, even when we want to hold our breath. Similarly, during this side hustle journey, breathe through the discomfort of promoting yourself ((because let’s be real, it’s not always easy putting ourselves out there), reaching out to potential clients, or tackling new projects.
Notice the patterns.
The more we tune into our breath, the better we can sense the signs of stress and anxiety. In the same way, noticing the patterns in our work and side hustle can alert us to areas that need attention. Or even simplification.

So here’s my mission for you this week: pay attention to your breathing. 😮💨 Take 30 seconds to pause and reflect before your next task. How can your breath help you slow down and approach your side hustle with intention? What’s one area where you’d like to invite more ease?

Forget Resolutions: 21 Things Content Entrepreneurs Should Start and Stop in 2024
I realize that 2024 is ending soon, but you can do these anytime. Read through them, see which of each applies to the season of your life you’re in right now, and then add them to your list.
Here are two that resonate with me right now:
START: Ask your audience more detailed questions about the problems that they’re having so you can provide content and offers that solve those issues.
STOP: Don’t think of AI as selling out or taking shortcuts when, in fact, it can be a partner in helping your business grow the way you want it to.
