Reaching the right people, my intention for the year, and micro-habits (#310)
Earlier this week, I was reading CJ Chilvers’ blog post about 2023, and part of this quote from Seth Godin spoke to me:
“An affective newsletter can completely change the game. The goal isn’t to reach a lot of people. The goal is to reach the right people. And to reach them in a way where they’re glad you showed up.”
There are a lot of folks who sign up for #jesspicks for different reasons. Either it was recommended to them, or they bought a course, or they are curious about building a side hustle.
But I think the folks who stay (👋🏾) are the ones who look forward to me showing up week to week. And they are walking away from each issue with a tip, resource, or simply inspiration to keep taking action.
You are my right people. And I want to keep showing up in a way that helps you. On that note, I would love to know what you are working on this year and how I can best support you. Please take a few minutes and complete this survey:

In other news, I’ve been working through the ‘Goodbye 2022, Hello 2023’ journal, and my intention/word for the year is Light.
For a few reasons:
With caregiving and the job/biz juggling, I often feel heavy - like I’m carrying the world on my shoulders. And those who know me know that has also led to a need for physical therapy. So, I want to find ways to lighten the load. Physically, mentally, and emotionally.
I want to make time for fun and play and have added a Thursday “fun slot” to my calendar to fill with cool things: happy hours with friends, shows/musicals, playing with LEGOs, and just leaving room for spontaneous things to come up. But more fun in 2023, please.
Light means ease, and I’d like to find easier ways to do things that allow me to lean into my strengths, delegate when I need to, create some systems, and have white space in my days for creativity.
Leaning into my human design more (I’m a Generator), I also realize it’s important to prioritize my joy and things that “light me up” as it helps me show up and spread that energy to others (like you!).
Have you set a word or intention for the year? Would love to hear - reply and let me know.
On to the picks!

📚. Reading: Gilded. I love fairy tales, and this retelling of the Rumplestiltskin story, while long, does not disappoint. The main character, Serilda, hides two maidens and tells this hunter that she is looking for straw to spin into gold as an excuse for her being out at night. Hunter then kidnaps her and forces her to spin straw into gold which she, of course, cannot. Then who should come to her rescue but a boy named Gild who is a gold-spinner. They make a deal; he spins straw into gold for her. And as you know, the story goes on. Lots of secrets and unexpected twists, especially as the hunter is an impressive villain, but it has kept me absorbed by the fantastical aspect of it all. Hoping to finish the second book in the next few days.
📺. Watching: The Wedding Veil movies. I was watching Hallmark one day and heard that there was a 4th Wedding Veil movie that looked fun, with these main characters (Lacey Chabert, Autumn Reeser, and Alison Sweeney), who I love. So I decided to check out the original trilogy. The three friends meet up every year in a different city to go antiquing (how fun is that tradition btw?), and this time they buy this beautiful wedding veil. Per legend, whoever has the veil will find true love. And it’s Hallmark, so you know this legend is true, right? Loved the first two movies. So romantical. Excited to check out the other two soon.

27 Life-Changing Micro Habits That Require Only A Few Minutes
“It may seem strange to do something for 30 seconds or just a few minutes. That’s an oddly achievable goal isn’t it? That’s the point of micro habits. Once you become used to the habits you set, you begin to do them naturally.”
Micro habits remind me so much of baby steps, and I love that they only need a few minutes of your time. Here are my faves from this list:
Write for two minutes in the morning as you drink your coffee
Drink a cup of water before having coffee to stay hydrated
Use your shower as a time to practice gratitude
Replace one sweetened drink with a glass of water
Which is your fave?
