selling implementation over info: an experiment(#388)
A few weeks ago, I watched this video: Stop selling info and do this instead, and it got me thinking about a new approach we can try with our side hustles.
Here are the key takeaways:
People are not buying courses like they used to. And the people that are buying courses aren’t finishing them.
Information itself is no longer valuable because so much is out there (that’s free).
Pat’s idea is to stop selling information and start selling implementation. (did your jaw drop, too?). There are three ways to do this:
Do it for them: Offer it as a service. Scale by becoming an agency.
Do it with them: Think coaching and consulting. Guide clients with info and accountability.
Do it with others: Community-based courses. Pat says many courses don’t work because there is no accountability. This way, folks can go through a process together.
And if you have info products? You can still increase their value in the eyes of your customers. How?
“Convert the convenience, not the information.” Package the information up for people to save them time, and people will pay.
Focus on your unique difference. What’s special about what you offer that’s different from the free information?
When thinking about creating a training for finding a side hustle idea, I had this video on my brain and wanted to see if I could apply some of these principles. Helloooo experiment… 🧪
Here is how I approached the Side Hustle Idea Kickstart:
Convert the convenience
Short & sweet. I created six 5-minute videos, perfect for busy entrepreneurs. (Loom’s free plan allows videos of up to 5 minutes, which also helps me save money! 😉)
Tips & tidbits. For each video, I also shared a cleaned-up version of the transcript (so folks who learn better by reading could do that). I also created bullet point lists of the essential points.
Sell the implementation
I created an interactive Q&A (text-based) where you can get personalized feedback on your answers or a quick dose of encouragement. Think of it as having me as a coach in your pocket while going through the training. Also, folks could add a pep talk if they need extra support.
Also (!!) in the future, I could turn it into a live course or a Get it Done Week if that interests folks, including that community/accountability piece.
The results? Check out this feedback:
“Jessica’s short and sweet mini-course (each video is five minutes!) helped me identify three side hustle ideas I had never considered before. This mini-course has guided questions and resources that will help you learn more about yourself and potential side hustles. Most of all, Jessica’s encouragement throughout is priceless, whether it's her warm and energetic tone in the videos or her supportive comments and personalized feedback in the course comment section.”
Even if I don’t always include an implementation component, I like making information more digestible and convenient, especially for us side hustlers.
Now I’m curious: Does any of this resonate? Is there a way for you to try this “sell implementation” experiment in your side hustle? Could you add a coaching add-on to one of your digital products or courses? Set it up as a challenge they can do in a group of other folks. Or is there an area where you can do it for them?
Drop me a reply - I’d love to hear your thoughts and brainstorm with you!
On to the picks!
P.S. I think I did some “converting the convenience” by summarizing my takeaways from the training for you. Let me know if you’d like more content breakdowns like this in the future!

🧑🏾🚀. Watching: The Ark. There are a lot of space shows, but I have to say this one is my favorite. Earth is dying, so spaceships (called arks) are sent to colonize a new planet. Each episode has a crisis, from waking out of cryosleep to not having water/food to dealing with an unknown enemy. I love the character growth, as crew members must step up to fill roles they never expected. It’s a nice blend of sci-fi and drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Currently watching season 2!

Start a Side Hustle, Build Yourself an Empire
This gem recently popped up, and I couldn’t resist sharing it again. Its core message is powerful:
“One of the greatest missed opportunities in life is starting a tiny little business.”
The beauty of a side hustle is its simplicity - you start by pursuing one thing interesting to you and not focusing on the money. You can use it as a creative outlet (maybe even a stress outlet). As you keep trying things and learning from them, you’ll see what’s possible. Remember, it’s not about building an empire overnight (or even building an empire at all); it’s about starting small and nurturing something you love that you can grow into something amazing over time.

Oh my gosh. As I was reading the section re: Pat Flynn, I immediately thought of your mini-course, Side Hustles Idea Kickstart! You sure implemented Pat's advice. Well done, Jessica! Second, this is serendipitous because I was literally thinking of my workshop idea (that I came up with during your SH Idea Kickstart) that I was supposed to launch in September (two days left, insert nervous laughter)...Anyway, I was literally I should just make it a YouTube video. Even if it's free it will reach (I hope!) more people and I will actually get it DONE without the extra step of a paywall and product listings and a course platform. Another wonderful newsletter, Jessica. Thank you!
