finding happiness in the present (#342)
Earlier this week, I ran across an article about “destination addiction”: the idea that our happiness lies in some distant future.
We can often get so caught up in making moves and getting to the next milestone that we do not take the time to enjoy the present and what it can teach us.
Aisha reminds us to find ways to appreciate the positives happening right now by doing a Right Here, Right Now list exercise and jotting down your answers to the following prompts:
The things that are bringing you joy right here and right now
The lessons you’re learning right here and right now
What it is you love about yourself right here and right now
The strides you are making right here and right now to help accomplish your goals
💡 Your mission over the next week, should you choose to accept it, is to create a Right Here, Right Now list.
“Its main purpose is to help you stop and really observe the occurrences in your day-to-day life and their role in your beautiful and unique story.”
Here’s my list:
Things bringing me joy:
Peach wine, salt/vinegar chips and Twizzlers (not necessarily together! 😍)
75-degree sunny days where I can sit or walk in the sunshine (instant mood booster!)
Lessons I’m learning:
Even though it makes me VERY uncomfortable, that conflict can be an opportunity to look at things with fresh eyes and potentially improve them (thanks, Adam!)
That it’s OK to honor my capacity and move things to the next day if needed: “Tomorrow is another day.” It’s also OK to lean on my support system a little more during these times.
What I love about myself:
I love that even with everything I’m juggling, I still find small pockets of time to take care of myself and do something that brings me joy.
My resilience and positivity. Whatever is going on, I won’t stay down for too long.
Strides I’m making to accomplish goals:
Dance class once a week and prioritizing movement when I can.
I am working with a coach to help me figure out my biz income streams (like speaking) to create more ease.
One goal I haven’t mentioned yet is the desire to travel more - I applied for my passport recently! 🎉

Jotting down these thoughts is a beautiful opportunity to pause, check in with yourself, and acknowledge the good things in the present moment.
What’s one of the things on your list? I’d love to know.
On to the picks!

💰. App: Fetch Rewards - this app turns grocery receipts into rewards. If you do a lot of in-store shopping, like me, save your receipts and scan them to earn points. You can then convert the points to gift cards!
🎧. Listening: daylist. If Spotify creates a curated playlist, I will probably love it. daylist is no different (announcement here). It reviews what you currently listen to at that day and time and pulls together a themed playlist for you. As I’m finalizing this newsletter on Friday night, this is my current one:

Say No to Everything That’s Not Aligned With Your Essential Priorities
[B]y saying yes to those things you take away mental energy from things that are aligned with your greater purpose. It might take one hour to participate in something, but the opportunity cost of that hour might be an entire day of lost focus on things that matter the most.

10 great iPhone productivity features you probably aren’t using, but should
As an iPhone user, this post was eye-opening. Here are a few that I have already started:
Using hashtags to be able to group related notes in Apple Notes
Taking advantage of the microphone feature to verbally type notes and not have to say comma or question mark.
The “Remind me” feature in the Mail app reminds me to respond to an email.
Which is your fave feature?

😍. Last issue’s top pick: Barbie Dance HIIT Workout.

Great inspiration for the week Jess. What you speak of reminds me of a Daniel Tiger episode where Daniel is soooooo impatient to get to the next thing, he misses the wow of the moment. The song is "Enjoy the wow, that's happening now". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9fMrLGtpTM
What I love about me is my dedication to learning. Whether it's to enhance me spiritually, personally, or professionally, I'm all in. Learning raises awareness and that promotes improvement in ourselves and others. Anyhoo, great post! <3
Dance is with an online community I joined earlier this year called "Tapas Movement" - https://tapasmovement.com/share/eqqqNg5KibB0VIuZ?utm_source=manual - the idea being smaller bursts of movement throughout the day and week. Mondays there's a half-hour, freeform dance party.
