Procrastination is such a punk.
Or maybe it isn’t.
Maybe it’s just a signal
Of something missing.
That you need to pay attention to.
A fear, perhaps.
Or self-doubt.
Or overwhelm.

But a signal, nonetheless.

~Tanya Moushi

I was talking to one of my pep talk clients this week who was procrastinating on a few tasks. I asked her if she had a sense of why she was stuck.

As I’ve dealt with my own procrastination over the years, I’ve realized that it’s often due to one (or a combination) of these things:

  • Lack of clarity/information - is it hard to get started because you’re not clear on the task or what is needed?

  • Limited energy - do you have the energy to dedicate to this work right now? Can you plan to work on it during your next productive window?

  • Perfectionism - are you trying to do it perfectly and don’t feel like you can? Can you instead find a way to shoot for 80% or declare this the “shitty first draft”?

  • The bigness of it all - does the task feel too big? Can you break it down into smaller steps? Plan to set a timer for 15 minutes and work on a baby step during that slot. (If you build some momentum, feel free to keep going!)

We can procrastinate for deeper reasons that may not be as obvious on the surface. Sit with it and ask yourself, “What is it about this task that has me stuck?” or “What might be missing?” Once you know the underlying concern, there is probably a way above that can address it.

Do you know what makes you procrastinate? Have you found a way around it?

I don’t always use them for #jesspicks, but they serve as good inspiration. Liz has templates designed to help you get clicks and replies, build relationships, and make sales.

  • 📺. Watching: Hijack. Idris Elba gets on this plane that gets hijacked, and as a negotiator, he does his best to work with the hijackers to get the 200+ passengers home safely. A pressure cooker of an Apple T.V. show. I was on the edge of my seat for every minute of every episode.

splits up his business time:

I want to do whatever I can to make our business successful. But cramming more work into my days is doing more harm than good.

So I’ve started to put some strict boundaries around my work hours with two well-defined blocks to make sure I spend 50% of my time working on the business and 50% of my time working in the business.

I love working. I love getting shit done. It makes me feel useful and productive. I’m a workaholic. On the one hand, I think that’s an awesome character trait. Others have to force themselves to work. Use silly Pomodoro timers or whatever. I don’t. But recently I’ve started to notice some not so great patterns in my behavior…
