"Breathe...right here in the middle of it all." ππΎββοΈ ~Morgan Harper Nichols
It's mid-October already. What the what. I have a feeling the next 2.5 months will fly by. Especially after Halloween, time seems to accelerate. On one hand, I'm thinking about how I can finish the year strong. On the other hand, I'm thinking of how to rest more over the next couple of months. Reality will most likely end up somewhere in the middle.
Thank you so much to those of you who answered my survey. Reading your feedback has totally given me an extra spring in my step this week. I've been struggling to see/know/understand if #jesspicks provides value. And you have made it clear to me that it does. Which is such a wonderful feeling. If you didn't get a chance to submit your thoughts yet, there is still time. The survey is here.
(sidenote: I loved the survey tool so much that I bought a lifetime subscription, because why not?)
In other news, I'm trying yoga. π§πΎββοΈ I can still count the number of times I've done yoga on one hand. But I think it might be something good to try, especially with my ankle recovery. So far, I shake ALOT. Downward dog is the hardest thing for me and I get a rush to my head each time I do it. Is that normal? π€£
But it's good to get some movement in. I'm starting with 5 minute practices using Down Dog and it's my "end of the work day activity" which seems to be working well. My favorite part so far? Hugging my knees to my chest - there is something about that movement that is just awesome.
Not sure if I'll stick with it, but it's worth a try. I do like the reminders to breathe too as I often hold my breath when doing exercises (and probably lots of other things).
What is your end of the work day activity? How do you "commute" from work to home?
On to the picks!
P.S. This made my week and I think is the universe's way of saying #jesspicks is the future. ππΎ

π Reading: One By One. Sometimes I need a good thriller and this one did not disappoint. Claire and her friends are going on a 1-week camping trip but her van breaks down on the way. They are lost in the woods with no cell reception and then people start disappearing one by one. I finished it in 3 days!
π Tool: Election Self-Care Plan. Take this quiz to create a personalized self-care plan to help you through this election season. Shine and theSkimm partnered up to offer this resource. My election self-care mantra? "There is courage in my calm."

Why Side Hustles Suck & A Few That Actually Work ($$$) β contrarianthinking.substack.com
I know this might be a weird headline to see here because you know I think side hustles are awesome. Codie Sanchez brings up a great point though: some things that are considered side hustles like surveys and dog walking are just OK. The problem is that most of them are not scalable and you have to do a lot of it for little $$. She provides an alternative: 29 horizontal income ideas like courses, newsletters (ππΎ), and writing.
"But horizontal income does exist and is to be sought after; it is income that you can layer and stack that requires minimal work, and not correlated to your having to work set hours."
This goodness is from Contrarian Thinking - a newsletter all about unconventional income streams and ways to leverage trends to build your business or your wealth.
