Supergirl, spicy margaritas, and what Iâm learning about capacity right now. (#425)
Iâm a fan of superheroes, and I loved the Supergirl series on the CW. One thing that always stuck with me from that show was a conversation between Kara (Supergirl) and her boss, Cat:
Kara: âI just don't know how you do it, Ms. Grant. I don't understand how you juggle it all.â
Cat: âyou have stumbled upon the most annoying question of the centuryâŚHow do you juggle it all? You learn, thatâs how. You start with two balls before adding another. I figured out how to be brilliant in business, and then I added being a brilliant mother. Far too many women burn out trying to do too much before they're ready.â
Kara: âSo you can have it all?â
Cat: âOf course. Just not all at once, and not right away. And not with that hair. Use conditioner, for Godâs sake.â
Catâs hair joke aside đ, she made a solid point:
You can have it all. Just not all at once.
This conversation perfectly captures something I struggle with a lot as a juggler: the difference between what I want to do and what I can actually hold right now.
C is for Capacity đ§ş
After talking about automations and tiny breaks the past couple of weeks, I realized everything in this series comes back to the same thing: working with your capacity instead of fighting it.
Some days, I feel like I can handle it all: writing, work, caregiving, emails, errands, exercise, side hustle progress, cleaning, the whole nine.
Other days? I do three things and feel completely wiped out, wondering where all my energy went.
Capacity is not just about time or energy. Itâs also about:
The season of life youâre in
What your body and mind can handle at this moment
How many decisions youâve already made today (decision fatigue is real!)
The emotional labor youâre carrying in the background - the stuff thatâs quietly draining but huge
Learning my Human Design as a 6/2 Generator helped me understand this better. I have tons of energy for things that feel like a âheck yes,â but I can drain myself fast if I push through the âmehâ stuff too long.
I need times to be âonâ and times to âturtleâ (my version of hermiting). Itâs still a work in progress, but Iâm learning to honor my capacity without feeling guilty.
As side hustlers, we can fall into âall or nothingâ thinking. Either we're crushing it at 100%, or we feel like we're failing.
(Feel free to mute those â5 a.m. cold showers + two hours of deep work before your day jobâ posts. đ)
Your capacity isnât fixed. It can shift depending on the day. Or the season.
Honoring it isnât giving up. Itâs listening to your body and adapting. Itâs noticing whatâs possible today and trusting that there will be time for everything else later.
What does this look like for you? Maybe it's:
Working on your side hustle for 15 minutes instead of trying to find a 2-hour block of time
Focusing on one social platform instead of trying to be everywhere
Batch-cooking on Sundays when you have energy, instead of stressing about daily meal prep
Saying no to that networking event so you can say yes to rest
For me, itâs:
Calling it a day and treating myself to a spicy margarita (sometimes thatâs exactly what I need)
Stepping away from my laptop to clean the kitchen when I donât have the focus in the moment to work on that project
Focusing on whatâs truly time-sensitive and moving everything else to next week
Making space for more fun, laughter, and summer adventures (and honoring my inner kid)
Your capacity is information, not judgment. Listen to it.
Itâs not about doing less. Itâs about choosing what matters right now and letting that be enough.
â
đŹ Howâs your capacity feeling lately? Whatâs one way youâve been honoring your limits or something youâd like to try?
Iâd love to hear how you are navigating this, too.

đ. 8 Permission Slips for Adults (that you didnât know you needed). I loved every one of these. Such good reminders that we can say no, rest now, and let go of things that donât serve us anymore (even gifts!). I highlighted the important bits and saved them to Readwise so theyâll keep popping up when I need them. Which one resonates most for you right now?
đśđžââď¸. When in doubt, go for a walk. âNuff said. One of my favorite go-to resets. While I may or may not be walking that 10K this year (lol, tbd), walking is still one of my favorite ways to clear my head and get some low-impact moves in. It makes everything feel a bit more manageable.
đť. The truth about building an online business: itâs f*cking hard. Ohhh yes. This post from is such a good reminder that the online business road is tough and unpredictable, but also worth it. My favorite takeaway:
The vital ingredient here is doing something you and your readers value. It's the sense of helping others and getting better together.

I love talking about side hustles and newsletters, but Iâd also be excited to craft an inspirational talk, too.

This was great! My capacity last week was completely drained from moving and unpacking (why do I have so much stuff?!). So I allowed myself to just let it be. I'm working on knowing my limits, so this was right on time. And "to turtle" is such a great phrase! I'm going to work on adding more play and joy into my life and honoring my boundaries.
