This week I got sisterlocks installed. For those unfamiliar, it’s a permanent protective style for natural hair for black women. I have to say, when the stylist finished, I wanted them to look like my mom’s, who had hers done a year and a half ago. Even after being told that this is the start of MY sisterlocks journey and will probably look different from hers, I still compared and despaired a little bit.Right now, they are tiny and very stiff. And I am not used to them yet. But, probably within a couple of months, they will start growing and eventually get a little thicker, and I’ll be able to do more with them.A few things that my sisterlocks consultant (the person who did the installation and will be doing maintenance for years to come) told me:Everyone’s journey is different. This is a process. You need to trust the process.Enjoy every part of the journey. This is only the beginning. As I think about running and building a business, similar tips apply. Sometimes we want our business to look like our friends. Sometimes we compare ourselves to others that are farther ahead in their journeys. Sometimes we feel bad about where we are. And want to be farther along. It’s alright, though, because we are human. Keep in mind that your journey will be different from mine. And that’s OK. Understand where you are, where (and how) you want to go, and trust the process of getting there. Look at your progress this far. Celebrate the steps you have taken. 🥂 This is only the beginning. On to the picks!
