Last week, I did my first Facebook Live. Dr. Barbara Provost (hi Barb!) invited me to talk to her awesome Purse Strings for Financially Fearless Women community about starting a side hustle.
And guess what? I didn't die. 💪🏾 Live video (and really video in general) is a bit of a scary place for me. I doubt that will change anytime soon, but like most things, we do it because there is a larger purpose to our work, even if we have to do it scared. Because people need to know what's possible. Because I want others to know that there are many ways to be an entrepreneur - even if you have a day job.
Barb and team put together a great one-page recap of my talk if you want to check it out. It was a great time, and we had a wonderful conversation about all things side hustle.
I've been using January as a "look back on 2020" month of sorts. To close things out, I wanted to highlight favorites: both mine and a few of yours.
I took all of the recommendations that have been mentioned in the #loves section of the newsletter in 2020 and put them all in one post:
There's a lot in there! So if you missed some newsletters in 2020 or want to browse the list, do it! I had even forgotten about some of them.
And your favorites. Here are the top 5 newsletter issues of 2020:
#210 - "What we choose to do with the light while it's here is up to us. Journey wisely." ~Alex Elle
#215 - "You will carry the lessons you gathered in this season into the next one." ~Morgan Harper Nichols
#197 - "Your biggest commitment must always be to yourself."~Bridgett Devoue
#194 - "Anything is possible when you have the right people there to support you." ~Misty Copeland
As we start moving ahead into the new year, I'm curious, what were some of your favorite #jesspicks recommendations or issues in 2020?
On to the picks!
P.S. Rest in heaven, Ms. Cicely Tyson. You changed the world for black women in film. 🙌🏾

There's a million newsletters about stocks and VC. Stefan's newsletter is about the options that don't get talked about as much.
Each week, Stefan dives into a different alternative asset. Past issues include investing in cars, farmland, and billboards.

🎧 Listening: Side Hustla! the playlist I made for us is making moves. Saw it out in the wild (aka Facebook) last week - thanks, Christine! Have you listened yet?
📺 Watching: Nancy Drew. The girl detective series but darker because it's the CW. Think ghosts and lots of things supernatural. 👻 Season 2 just started, and I AM READY.

A Letter from Your Calling — tinybuddha.com
I love this letter written by Tara Sophia Mohr as if she was your calling. What a wonderful reminder for the work we are meant to do.
"It’s me. The one who keeps talking to you about that thing. That project. That possibility.
I know you think you couldn’t be the one for the job, but honestly, if you weren’t the one for the job, I wouldn’t have come to you with it."
Listen to that voice. The world needs you.
The Modern Trap of Feeling Obligated to Turn Hobbies Into Hustles — repeller.com
"We don’t have to monetize or optimize or organize our joy. Hobbies don’t have to be imbued with a purpose beyond our own enjoyment of them. They, alone, can be enough."
Now don't get me wrong, I make part of a living talking about what's possible with side hustles. And I stand by that. But not everything has to turn into a hustle, as Molly Conway reminds us. She also talks about the larger issue of busyness and hustle culture.
Do things purely for the joy of it. I wouldn't want to turn my reading, work on jigsaw puzzles, or even dance into a business. I do those things because they make me happy and help me recharge.
