“I get by with a little help from my friends” 🤝🏾 ~The Beatles
how support can show up quietly (and still matter) (#443)
I used to think support had to look a very specific way. Especially with caregiving.
I wanted relief.
A handoff.
Someone to step in and take the weight for a while.
But life doesn’t really work that way.
Family dynamics are complicated. Not every decision is mine to make. Not every kind of help is available, even when people care.
A couple of years ago, I did Coaching with Clay (a workshop that combined meditation, visualization, and hands-on clay work). And I realized something important:
What I wanted wasn’t someone to fix everything. I just wanted to feel supported.
That shifted things. Because once I stopped looking for support in only one form, I started noticing it in others.
It showed up as someone simply being present. Not solving. Not advising. Just there.
It showed up as routines I could rely on. Movement that brought me back to myself. Tools that made things simpler instead of harder.
It showed up as letting “good enough” be enough: in my house, my schedule, my expectations.
And none of this was the “here’s the help you asked for on a silver platter” moment I imagined.
But it was real. And it helped.
S is for Support 💝✨
(and noticing it when it shows up differently than expected)
I’ve noticed something similar in side hustle life.
We often think support has to look like more time, more help, more money, more capacity.
But when your time and energy are unpredictable, support often shows up in quieter ways. It might look like:
your partner giving you Saturday mornings to do your thing (even if it’s just two hours)
templates (like these) that make starting easier than staring at a blank page
a newsletter (hey! 👋🏾) that reminds you you’re not alone
a routine that welcomes you back after breaks
redefining what “done” or “success” looks like in this season
working in 5-minute pockets instead of waiting for ideal conditions
Support doesn’t always show up as direct help with a task. Sometimes it’s help carrying the emotional load, so you’re not holding everything by yourself.
And sometimes, support looks like changing your expectations.
Not fixing everything. Not doing more. Just making things a little lighter.
Especially if you’re used to being the strong one.
The reliable one.
The one who figures it out.
—
Someone once told me that asking for help is a sign of strength — and that it gives the people in our lives a chance to support us.
I’m still practicing that.
So I’ll leave you with this question:
What would make you feel more supported right now?
Sometimes the answer is rest.
Sometimes it’s structure.
Sometimes it’s lowering the bar.
Sometimes it’s letting something be simpler than planned.
All of it counts.
And that kind of support? That’s what makes it possible to keep going.
