When folks have asked me how I’ve been doing the past few weeks, I often picture Dory and say, “I’m swimming.”
I’m doing it and juggling all the things. But this caregiving season, in particular, is really exhausting and has become a full-time job in and of itself.
Sometimes, it’s rough out here in these streets.
I found these words that I wrote almost a year ago extremely helpful this week:
As someone who talks side hustles all the time, the question of balancing priorities and managing time often comes up.
At a bare minimum, we are balancing work and business. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. We are playing several other roles (parent, caregiver, mother, sister, friend) that must also be factored in.
And in the midst of it all, we have to take care of ourselves so that we can do #allthethings.
At any given moment, our priority has to shift to what’s most important at that time.
The juggle is real.
Sometimes the balls must drop until we can pick them back up.
But we’ll get through it. Together.
You might be feeling overwhelmed.
There may be so much you are trying to get done.
And maybe you simply don’t have the energy.
During times like this, it’s important to honor our capacity and remember:
Baby steps.
Grace.
Prioritizing self-care and joy.
During this season, our work/productivity/output may look different. And that’s OK. 💖
We’ll get through it. We’ll keep swimming. Together.
On to the picks!

#ease 🫶🏾
In this section, I plan to provide things/tips/resources that are helping me with caregiving, biz, self-care, and juggling in general. In the hopes that it’ll inspire you as well.
This week’s ease tip comes from
:“I recently got magnetic hooks. I put one on the front door so I can hang [my keys] up as soon as I come in and grab them on my way out. And I don’t have to look for my keys cause they are always in the same place! I also hung my wall calendar on the side of the fridge using a magnet hook. So no holes in the wall.” 😊
If you have found ways to make your life easier, please share, and I’d love to feature them here as well.

🧥.Shopping: StitchFix. I’ve been using this service for over 8 years (!!) and have received 31 fixes in that time. You complete a style profile and tell them what clothes (and accessories) you like to wear. They send over 5 items in a box. And you pay for what you keep. It makes shopping for clothes so easy. And I love that they send me things I’d never buy for myself, but it’s usually a great look. Here’s $25 if you want to give it a try!
📧. Resource: Email Marketing Membership (EMM). This $9/month membership provides weekly newsletter templates. I don’t always use them, but it’s a fantastic resource when I’m stuck on what to write about in #jesspicks. Liz also includes templates to help you get clicks and replies, build relationships, and make sales, along with monthly Q&A sessions. Special Note: EMM is turning three next week, so if you click here between February 12th - 16th, you’ll be able to get a trial for only $3!

5 Myths & Misconceptions About Side Hustles
In my work with side hustlers and being a side hustler myself, I come across many myths. #1 is that side hustles are meant to become full-time businesses. Nope. Not necessarily.
Some of us love our day jobs (and frankly appreciate having benefits) and are happy to keep our side thing a side thing. What’s a myth you hear often about side hustles?

“A gift for your future self is something you do today that makes your life easier, or better, at some point in the future. It is something that our present self does, with our future self in mind.”
I love this idea of doing things in the present to make your future self’s life easier.

Yes yes yes. I really need to keep hearing what you write about side-hustles. I'm still trying to scale my side-hustle DOWN, after nearly a decade of trying to scale it up to be full-time (and not succeeding), and I'm still trying to get the balance right in my head. It's really hard, and i need all the help I can get, because I feel like a failure by accepting a really nice permanent full-time job at an organisation I've always wanted to work for in a job that uses my 30 years' worth of hard-won skillsets with people who respect those skillsets ...
Put like that, I now feel positively ungrateful. As well. Argh.
Brains are _stupid_.
Helpful thing for me and the resident Bloke has been putting a sticky whiteboard on the back of the laundry door. It's in the centre of the house, next to the kitchen, so we walk past it a billion times a day. On it is the shopping list and upcoming events and when the dogs need the next Cartrophen and when the ducklings hatched and what my side-hustle's doing next and what subscription services we're paying for at the moment ...
Both of us are, I suspect, a bit ADHD, and if information not's there in front of us, we tend to forget it. (Also, I'm deep in menopause and have the memory of a disintegration doily. I can barely finish a sentence at the moment and it's driving me insane). So this saves frustration of the "I TOLD you that last week!" kind.
Eek! Excited to be mentioned in this week's newsletter! I hope your subscribers find magnetic hooks as full of #ease as I do. Thanks so much, Jess! Enjoy your weekend! 😊
